Today as I walked into the office very early I noticed a few things which truly enlightened me. I work in a company which has employees from all castes and creeds and I noticed how we should appreciate how they all pray and pay their respects to the One Almighty just as we as Sikhs do.

My boss is a South Indian. As he walks in every morning he removes his shoes and opens his shutters and its odd I never realised why his office is where it is.....his office is smaller than mine, and its very warm throughout the day. Being the Boss he can have any office. But as soon as his shutters are opened he faces the Sun directly. And today I saw he first folded his hands in utmost humility and bowed at the Sun. Next he turned to his little praying mantle and lit his Jyot and Incense sticks and got out a little book and did his prayers. South Indians usually also make this mixture of turmeric and milk and put it across their head. Next he did that. Only after that did he request the cook to get him his medicines and tea! Then for the rest of the day he plays his bhajans from a small tape recorder.

A few weeks ago while fasting was going on for the Muslims, one of our team managers who is a Muslim was in the office. Many times I had seen a small jute mat neatly folded and placed in the corner of his office. On this day we had our monthly meetings going on and despite the importance of the meetings he came out from the conference, cleaned himself in the little washrooms we have and lay his mat down and did his prayers.

Just like that I have 2 Gujrati collegues who also walk into their offices and light their jyots and incence sticks and do their prayers.

For a few days I have been playing a lot of Paath on my computer. My day starts with the full Nitnem and then Simran the whole day long loud enough for many to hear. And yesterday my Director from the Uk walked in to greet me and appreciated it and asked for a copy!

This is just a small part of my daily life and where I am I wanted to share with everyone. And because of these prayers I always feel all the positive energies in our office.

Yesterday was a special day for the Hindu ladies called Karva Chauth. The first thing I saw when I logged into facebook is all these "sikhnis" having their status set as how they are starving all day for the long life and health of their husbands. It annoyed me as this is a hindu ritual. Then I felt very sympathetic towards them as they have no clue to what our Gurus teachings are. They are so ignorant.

We should always respect and learn about others religions, but practice our own. And as iSikh as we have been doing for the past years keep trying to teach our ignorant ones of teachings of the Gurus.

The various Hindu and Sikh organisations in Nairobi are organising a Sports Festival in the first week of October 2009!! Various religious groups have been invited to take part and it would be a great opportunity for our iSikhites to show-off their sporty talents!!!

We have to form our team of Sikhs to compete with Lohana's , Shahs, Patels and a couple of more societies/communities in the various events. I know this might turn out to be a real challenge, but its a wonderful opportunity for us to come out in as many numbers as possible and take part in as many events as possible.

Please find attached the registration forms and events schedule for the event .. The deadline is for the 18th of this month. Please invite any other of your friends who may be interested in taking part in this sports festival - which I believe is the first of its kind held in a very long time!!

Keep watch on this space and our website for more updates on this event.
